FEMA Survival Kit Essentials: Preparing for Emergencies

Being prepared can mean staying safe or facing severe hardship in an emergency. FEMA—the Federal Emergency Management Agency—recommends that every household maintain a survival kit to support its members for several days after a disaster. Your readiness to handle unforeseen events rests heavily on this critical set of supplies, which can sustain you when basic services are not accessible.

FEMA Survival Kit Cover Image

Assembling a FEMA survival kit is a straightforward process. Start by gathering essential items such as water, food, and medications.

FEMA suggests one gallon of water per person per day for drinking and sanitation, and at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food per person. Include a flashlight and extra batteries, a first aid kit, and local maps in your emergency kit.

It’s important to customize your kits to cover the specific needs of your family, including items for pets or children, important family documents, and chargers for electronic devices.

Keep your kit in a designated place and make sure that all members of your household know where it is. Regularly checking and updating your survival kit ensures that you’ll be ready when you need it. For detailed guidance on building your kit, visit the pages on FEMA.gov and Ready.gov.

Essentials of a FEMA Survival Kit

When preparing for emergencies, it’s vital to have a survival kit that adheres to FEMA’s recommendations. Your survival kit is your lifeline where access to everyday amenities is cut off.

Water and Hydration Options

FEMA Survival Kit have plenty of water on had per day per person

Ensure one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for both drinking and sanitation. Consider including water purification tablets, a water filter, or bleach (unscented, with a dropper) for treating water if supplies run low.

Food Supplies

Your kit should contain a three-day supply of non-perishable food items. Choose items that don’t require refrigeration, cooking, water or special preparation, such as ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits, vegetables, and protein or fruit bars.

Communication Tools

A battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert will keep you informed. Maintain a fully charged cell phone and a backup power bank. Write down important phone numbers and keep them in a waterproof container.

Lighting and Power Sources

Include a flashlight with extra batteries. LED flashlights last longer and are more durable. Also, consider emergency glow sticks which provide temporary light without batteries. For power, solar chargers or a hand-crank generator can be invaluable.

Shelter and Comfort

In the face of disaster, ensuring your safety and maintaining a semblance of comfort are critical. Your emergency kit should provide options for shelter, ways to stay warm and rested, and basic personal care to protect your health and well-being.

Emergency Shelter Options

You will need a reliable shelter to stay protected from harsh weather conditions. Pack an all-weather tent or space blanket that can retain heat. Specialized Pandemic Shelter Kits are designed for use in congregated shelters to keep you safe from elements and potential health risks.

Clothing and Bedding

FEMA Survival Kit take appropriate clothing and bedding

Choose season-appropriate clothing that can be layered to adjust to changing temperatures. Include a sturdy pair of shoes and a warm hat to protect from cold. For bedding, consider compact options like sleeping bags or travel-sized pillows to ensure restful sleep even in an emergency.

Personal Care Items

Your kit should have personal care items to maintain hygiene and comfort. Essential items include toothbrushes, toothpaste, sanitary wipes, and soap.

Hygiene kits from official channels are designed to replace those currently in stock, as stated by FEMA. Maintaining personal hygiene can prevent illness and help you stay comfortable in difficult circumstances.

Health and Safety

In an emergency, maintaining your health and safety is crucial. This includes having a well-stocked First Aid Kit, ample Prescription Medications, and necessary Personal Protection Equipment.

First Aid Kit

Your First Aid Kit should contain items to handle minor injuries and serious health conditions. Items should be kept in a waterproof container. Here’s a basic list of supplies.

  • Sterile gloves
  • Adhesive bandages of various sizes
  • Antibiotic ointment
  • Sterile gauze pads and roller bandages
  • Tweezers, scissors, and a thermometer
  • Aspirin or non-aspirin pain reliever
  • First-aid manual

Refer to the comprehensive guidelines by FEMA for a more detailed list.

Prescription Medications

Ensure you have a minimum three-day supply of all your Prescription Medications. These should be current and stored correctly to maintain their potency. Additionally, keep a list of all your medications, including dosages and any allergies, in your kit.

Personal Protection Equipment

Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) is vital for protecting yourself against hazards. Your kit should include:

  • Masks for everyone, which fit properly over the nose and mouth.
  • Latex or nitrile gloves, to avoid contamination.
  • Eye protection, such as goggles or face shields.
  • Hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

For a better understanding, visit Ready.gov to learn which PPEs are recommended and how to use them effectively.

Tools and Supplies

In preparing your FEMA survival kit, it is crucial to focus on tools and supplies that serve multiple purposes and can aid in a variety of situations, from navigation to repair.

Multipurpose Tools

Multipurpose tools are indispensable in a survival situation. Your kit should include a sturdy knife, which is essential for cutting materials, and preparing food, and can be utilized for self-defense if necessary. You should also consider packing a multi-tool that combines several functions, such as pliers, screwdrivers, and can openers, in one compact device.

Navigation and Signaling Devices

For navigation and signaling, a compass and detailed maps of your area are necessary to guide you to safety. Ensure you know how to use them before an emergency arises. Additionally, include a whistle to signal for help and a battery-powered or hand-crank radio (NOAA Weather Radio, if possible) to receive important weather alerts and emergency information.

Repair Kits and Equipment

In the repair kits and equipment section of your kit, carry duct tape and cable ties, which can be used for quick fixes and securing items together. A basic sewing kit could prove useful for repairing gear and clothing. For added preparedness, have a non-sparking wrench or pliers to turn off utilities if needed.

Preparedness and Maintenance

Preparing an emergency kit is crucial, but maintaining its readiness ensures its usefulness when disasters strike. Your kit should be in a state of constant readiness and your skills sharp for effective deployment.

Kit Review and Update Procedures

Quarterly Checks: Every three months, you need to review your emergency kit’s contents. Ensure food and water supplies are fresh, checking expiration dates and replenishing as needed. Replace batteries and check the functionality of all electronic devices.

Seasonal Replacement: Adjust clothing and sleeping supplies to match the upcoming season. Summer may call for lighter materials, while winter demands thermal gear.

Skill Development and Training

First Aid Knowledge: Regularly review your first aid manual and refresh your knowledge. Schedule annual first aid training to stay current on procedures and techniques.

Emergency Drills: Conduct biannual emergency drills. Practicing evacuation routes and communication plans will embed these actions as second nature in case of a true emergency.

Proactively managing your kit and investing time in training are the cornerstones of effective emergency preparedness. Stay diligent to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you.

Special Considerations

When preparing your FEMA survival kit, it’s crucial to customize the contents to cater to the specific needs of every member of your family, including children, pets, and those requiring mobility aids.

Children and Infant Needs

Ensure you have a supply of baby formula, diapers, and baby wipes for infants, as well as games and activities to keep children occupied. Consider the nutritional needs and favorite snacks of your children to ensure their comfort and well-being during an emergency.

Pet Supplies

FEMA Survival Kit pet supplies

Your kit should also include items for your pet’s survival, such as a pet food supply, extra water, a leash, and a portable carrier. Remember any medications your pet may need and keep an updated photo in case they get lost.

Accessibility and Mobility Aids

If you or a loved one relies on mobility aids, make sure to have spare parts and tools for repairs. Store supplies in an accessible location and plan for battery backups or alternate power sources for electric mobility aids. Include any special hygiene products that might be required.

Kit Storage and Portability

Your emergency kit should be compact and lightweight, which facilitates easy mobility during an evacuation. Choose containers that are durable and simple to transport.

  • Plastic bins
  • Duffel bags
  • Backpacks

Prioritize a container that is waterproof and airtight to protect the contents from the elements.

Packing Tips:

  • Label each container clearly for quick identification.
  • Use airtight plastic bags to organize items within the container.
  • Sealing items can also prevent water and pest damage.

Container Considerations:

  • Size: Ensure it’s large enough to hold necessary supplies but fits within your vehicle and is easy to carry.
  • Weight: Regularly check to ensure the kit can be comfortably carried by you or a family member.
  • Accessibility: Store it in an area you can access quickly, even in the dark or during the chaos of an emergency.

Accessibility Checklist:

  • Easy to reach location
  • A clear path to the kit
  • Known to all household members

Remember to maintain and update your emergency kit regularly. Supplies can become outdated or be affected by factors such as changes in the climate where the kit is stored. Keep essential items readily available for any situation that requires a sudden departure from your home.

How to Use a Compass for Navigation

Mastering compass navigation equips you with valuable outdoor skills, allowing you to safely explore and confidently reach your destination.

Understanding Map and Compass Basics

Best Compass for Survival compass and map

Before venturing out, align your compass with the map. Ensure north on the compass corresponds with north on the map. Remember that a compass point toward magnetic north, which can differ from the map’s north due to magnetic declination. Adjust your compass for this discrepancy to maintain accuracy.

Triangulation Technique for Pinpointing Location

Triangulation is a method of determining your exact position. Identify two or three known landmarks on your map and sight them with your compass. Draw lines from these landmarks on your map using the compass bearing. Your location is where the lines intersect. Practice this technique to bolster your navigational confidence.

Navigating without a Map

If you’re without a map, your compass is still a trustworthy tool. Determine your direction of travel and maintain a consistent bearing, noting prominent landscape features to avoid walking in circles. Use natural indicators such as the position of the sun or stars in combination with your compass for a more precise orientation.

Compass Care and Maintenance

To ensure your compass remains precise and reliable during your outdoor adventures, regular calibration, protection from adverse conditions, and proper storage are critical.

Regular Compass Calibration

Calibrate your compass periodically to maintain its accuracy. This involves checking it against a known reference point, such as a surveyed marker or map bearing, to ensure that it is providing the correct readings. If you notice discrepancies, adjust the declination setting according to your current location.

Protection from Extreme Weather and Impacts

Your compass is sensitive to extreme temperatures and impacts. Avoid leaving it exposed to high heat such as direct sunlight inside a car, or intense cold, which could affect the liquid inside. Protect it from falls or heavy blows by using a cushioned case or lanyard which keeps it secure on your body during activities.

Proper Storage Techniques

When you’re not using your compass, store it away from electronics and magnets, as these can interfere with the magnetic needle. Keep it in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture build-up or bubble formation in liquid-filled compasses. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to gently clean the baseplate and needle to ensure visibility and unhindered movement.

Compass-Related Survival Skills

In the realm of survival, your ability to navigate can mean the difference between reaching safety and becoming further lost. A compass is a fundamental tool for orientation, and mastering its use in conjunction with mapping and natural navigation methods is crucial for wilderness survival.

Reading Topographic Maps

Best Compass for Survival topographic map

To effectively use a compass, you must be proficient in reading topographic maps. These maps depict terrain features and elevations, allowing you to understand the landscape.

Identify major landmarks and contour lines that represent different elevations. Aligning your compass with the map’s grid north and understanding the local magnetic declination is essential for accurate navigation.

Natural Navigation Methods

Apart from a compass, nature offers its own navigation tools. Observing the sun provides direction — it rises in the east and sets in the west. Additionally, vegetation patterns, wind direction, and the flow of water can indicate compass directions.

For instance, trees often have thicker growth on their southern side in the Northern Hemisphere due to more sunlight exposure.

Night Navigation Using Stars

Navigating at night makes use of the stars. The North Star, Polaris, sits almost directly over the North Pole; locating Polaris allows you to determine true north. It can be found by locating the Big Dipper constellation and following an imaginary line through its “pointer stars” to the next bright star, which is Polaris.

Knowledge of constellations and the movement of celestial bodies enriches your night-time navigation skills.

Emergency Situations and Compass Use

In emergency situations, a compass is not just a tool for navigation but a multi-functional survival instrument. It can be crucial for signaling, moving safely, and locating resources.

Signaling for Help with a Mirror Compass

If you’re lost or in distress and want to signal for help, a mirror sighting compass can serve as an essential tool. You can use the mirror to reflect sunlight and catch the attention of rescuers from a distance. Point the mirror toward the sun, and angle it to reflect the light toward your target using the sight.

Moving in Low Visibility Conditions

During foggy conditions or in the darkness of night, your compass becomes indispensable for direction. It ensures that you move in a straight line and prevents walking in circles. The cardinal points on your compass, as well as features like a glow in the dark indicator, help you maintain your bearing when landmarks are not visible.

Finding Water and Shelter Using Directional Aids

By knowing certain survival tips, like moving downhill typically leading to water, or understanding the sun’s path can guide you to shelter, your compass becomes a vital ally. Use it to maintain a consistent direction towards your goal.

Compass Legality and Restrictions

When considering the use of survival compasses, it’s important to be aware of regulations that may apply in certain situations and locations. This will help ensure you are using your compass legally and ethically.

Compass Use in Protected Areas

You should check local laws before using a compass in protected areas, such as national parks or wildlife reserves. Some regions may have specific guidelines or restrictions on off-trail navigation to prevent ecological damage.

For instance, veering off marked trails in sensitive habitats could disturb wildlife or harm plant life. Always abide by park rules to preserve the natural environment for future generations.

Traveling with a Compass

Traveling internationally with a survival compass poses no significant legal issues. However, security protocols at airports may require you to place metallic compasses in your checked baggage or declare them if they contain large amounts of metal or liquid.

Keep your compass accessible for inspection when passing through security checks to avoid any inconvenience.

Within different countries, there may be regulations regarding the importation of certain types of compasses—especially if they include military-grade features. Clarify these details with customs authorities of your destination country to ensure a hassle-free travel experience.

Prepping Your Arsenal for Personal and Home Protection

Prepping Your Arsenal? We all know that we are vulnerable to crime in our day-to-day lives. Staying prepared with the necessary tools and knowledge is the key to successful personal protection. Stocking up a proper arsenal for personal and home protection can be complicated, but there are some basic guidelines you should follow when deciding what items will best suit your needs.

Prepping Your Arsenal for Personal and Home Protection

When the SHTF, you will be more than happy that you have taken a few measures to prep your arsenal so you can protect not only your loved ones but everything else that you have prepped.

Stocking Up a Proper Arsenal

I’ve broken this down to five separate tips to try and keep it simple for you. Bear with me as some of these seem like more than one actual item.

Choose Guns with Common Calibers

Picking guns with commonly available ammo is a much better choice than choosing something obscure because you may not be able to find more of it around if you run out. Why is this important? Having a gun that you can use to protect yourself is important but being able to actually find ammunition for that gun if need be will make all the difference.

Even it if gets to the point where you have to swap with people to get more ammo – having a rare kind of caliber will make it difficult.

The last thing you want to do is to advertise that you have guns, have ammo, or even worse, that you are out of ammo and can’t protect your home.

Buy Sturdy, Quality Guns

If this is a hobby or something that you really want in order to protect yourself from day-to-day crime, then buy guns that will last for years and not need to be replaced every few months.

Prepping Your Arsenal

Try to buy guns that are made from quality materials and not cheap plastic or other breakable components. Your life may depend on it in the future, so you want a gun that is going to work when needed without breaking down easily.

Get Some Diversity in Your Arsenal

One gun won’t always do everything you need, preferably you’ll have at least three: a shotgun for hunting and defense, a rifle for ranged defense and larger game hunting, and a pistol for times you can’t carry a long gun.

The shotgun is the one weapon that you should have in your arsenal if possible.

Shotguns are great for self-defense because they can go through doors, locks, and other obstacles with ease – but also because of their widespread shot and how easy it is to hit someone at close range with them.

The rifle would be a perfect choice too as it can take out most of the smaller games and then have enough ammunition to be used for self-defense.

The pistol is a good weapon if you’re going into areas where long guns are not allowed, but it should never be your only choice because they don’t do as much damage as other weapons like shotguns or rifles would.

Prepping Your Arsenal

Don’t Choose Something Underpowered

Trying to fight off attackers with birdshot or a .22 rifle isn’t impossible, but using something like buckshot and a 5.56mm is much easier.

The first shot you take should do enough damage, and the criminals will know this as well. They’ll also know that they can’t get away with stealing your belongings because if it comes down to it, you would be ready to fight back or make a last stand.

Get Plenty of Practice

All that firepower is wasted if you can’t hit your targets. If you have no experience shooting, start off on a .22 and work your way up, then practice plenty with the guns you own to get a feel for them.

You should also practice regularly to make sure you are still on target and can use your firearms when needed to protect yourself.

If you don’t know where to practice, find a range or shooting club near you – some are even open to the public. A good place to start is to ask the gun shop that is selling you the weapon.

Often those places have someone who can give you hints and tips on how to use, clean, and shoot that weapon.

Prepping Your Arsenal

Proper Arsenal Maintenance is Key

Storing firearms and ammo improperly can result in them malfunctioning more often or even not working at all, which would be deadly in a sudden defense situation.

To prevent rust or even worse, you’ll want to make sure the guns are stored in a dry and cool place. Storing them inside of safes is also a good idea as it will keep children out of them more easily without needing an alarm system. Make sure that all your ammo storage containers are locked up if they have keys so that children can’t get into them.

If you don’t want to be tempted by the gun, then store it away from where you sleep. Storing guns and ammo together is never a good idea because that way they are more likely to get stolen or taken as well.

This should be your first step in preparing for personal and home protection – but you need to do more than just that! Stocking up on other weapons, ammunition, food supplies, medical equipment is all important too so make sure you take care of those as well!

If you follow these steps, you’ll have a proper arsenal for personal and home protection.

Provide each child with something to read. A good book that isn’t too long or too heavy can keep children entertained while broadening their minds and helping them improve their reading skills.

The types of books you’ll select will depend on the ages of your children. If you have younger children who aren’t great at reading, you can always grab a kid-friendly magazine for them to look through. Kid-friendly magazines often have bright and colorful animations with large text and smaller words that are easier for little ones to recognize.

Not only can you play these games with the children and make it a family ordeal, but you can also teach them how to play these games with one another. It can spark some creativity in their minds, encouraging them to come up with even more fun games to play together to get the time to pass a lot faster. 5. Remember Some Riddles to Keep Them Thinking

Try to think about some of the riddles you were taught when you were a child and then teach those riddles to your children. When you were a child, your parents may have told you a few riddles to put your brain to the test and to see if you could come up with the correct answer.

It’s something you can pass down to your children, asking them some of the same funny and exciting riddles to see what they come up with right away and a few minutes or hours later.
